"Education is a social process...Education is growth...Education is, not a preparation for life; education is life itself." John Dewey
Educating out people is among the most important issues of today. Our education department plays a vital role in providing services as Higher education assistance, vocational assistance, tutoring, back to school assistance, and a grade incentive program.
Our Higher Education assistance allows our members young and old to further their education. The tribe has assisted its members for a number of years. Students can receive $1200/$2400 in assistance for school. The procedure for this assistance is for the tribal member to call the Education department and request application to be filled out prior to attending any university. upon submission of the application, the department will verify all documents and process the information. All of our students have to maintain certain requirements under our Policy and Procedures Manual in order to retain assistance from the Tribe.
The Education department also helps individuals attend vocational training. At Vo-tech, a student can learn a trade so that they may obtain a job in their community. A Policy and Procedures manual mandates our vocational assistance program as well. Vo-tech offers training in air conditioning repair, appliance repair, automotive technology, business, nursing, to name a few.
Other programs the education department offers are: Tutoring, our tutoring program is being offered via an education grant. This allows us to offer assistance to our in school children that need extra assistance. We offer tutoring twice a week during the school year.
Back to School assistance is also available to our children grades: Pre-K to 12th. At the beginning of each school year, we mail out gift cards in the amount of $75 to each student to help the families with school purchases.
The tribe also offers a grade incentive program for our in school children. This program has gone over well with the children. The tribe pays $10 foall A's and $5 for every B earned. Our grade incentive program give our children the desire to achive because of the monetary rewards at the end of each six weeks.
Graduations are such an outstanding achievement. Our graduating students receive monetary rewards for their prestigious accomplishments.
In closing, the Jena Band of Choctaw Indians, takes pride and overwhelmingly supports our children and our future leaders of tomorrow. Shoul you need assistance or have any questions, please call the Education Department at 318-992-0135.
